Frequently Asked Questions

How can I prepare for my first visit?

-Please fill out our new patient paperwork – you will receive an email link with all of the forms after scheduling your first appointment. If you prefer to fill out forms in-office, please arrive to your first appointment approximately 20 minutes early.

-Wear loose-fitting clothing that will allow the acupuncturist to access acupuncture points on the legs and arms – typically below the knees and elbows.

-Be sure to eat a small meal or snack before coming for your treatment.

What might I expect from an acupuncture treatment?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine (approximately 0.2 mm). They feel nothing like a hypodermic needle that western physicians use for drawing blood and administering shots. When the needles are inserted, you may experience a sensation of tingling or warmth. People are often surprised to find that treatments are actually quite relaxing. In general, the effect of acupuncture is gentle with minimal side effects.

Are the needles sterile?

Yes. All needles used are sterile, individually packaged, and disposed of after each use.

How long do treatments last?

An initial visit will last between 1 and 1.5 hours. This will include a consultation, evaluation, and treatment. Follow-up appointments will last between 45 minutes and 1 hour.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of treatments needed varies from patient to patient, depending on the severity and duration of the condition, patient lifestyle, and compliance. Typically, patients should come for treatments twice weekly for the first several weeks, then once weekly when the patient’s condition improves. When the condition is stabilized or eliminated, the patient can come once every two weeks or once a month for maintenance care. It is advisable for patients to come in for periodic check-ups to prevent future problems.

Can Chinese medicine be used with medication and Western medical care?

Chinese medicine can be used in conjunction with Western medicine. Patients should inform their practitioners about any medications they are taking. As acupuncture treatment progresses, the need for drugs may decrease, and, with the consent of the patient’s physician, the patient may be able to discontinue medications.

Is acupuncture effective on children?

Yes. In fact, children often respond faster than adults. For children that are afraid of needles, the doctors can use alternative techniques such as acupressure, moxibustion, and manual therapy techniques.
